A Man of Few Words

Quiet Man is one of many wonderful songs on John Prine’s self-titled debut album. Here’s a snippet:

Oodles of light what a beautiful sight
Both of God’s eyes are shining tonight
Rays and beams of incredible dreams
And I am a quiet man.

Dylan, the master lyricist, speaks of Prine’s work as  “pure Proustian existentialism”. Never having read Proust but always meaning to, I will take Bob’s word for it.

Speaking of quiet men, I’ve always quite liked Proverbs 17:27:

He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

  1. “You got news for me … ” Love it. He does remind me of Bob Dylan. What do you think, Tom? ;-)

  2. Obviously greatly influenced. Prine has a!ways seemed to me to be a cross between Dylan and Hank Williams. This first album of his is a real masterpiece.
